Make the stone selection clear

Stone varies in size, finish, thickness and appearance. Identify the specified product and installation system, together with the elevations and sections showing where it belongs. This helps distinguish the wall area from corners, returns, caps and other detailed pieces.

For an addition or work that meets existing stone, provide photos and the original product information if available. The appearance of existing material can change with age and exposure, so clarify the intended match and any sample-review process with the project team.

Send the details that define your stone package

  • Stone product or material schedule, manufacturer or supplier information and finish requirements.
  • Elevations and wall sections showing stone locations and transitions to brick or other materials.
  • Details for corners, openings, returns, sills, caps and special shapes where specified.
  • Project requirements for backing, support, anchors, flashing and joints, with trade responsibilities identified.
  • Material supply arrangements, site access, construction schedule and bid deadline.

If cast-stone pieces are included in the project, identify them separately and include the piece schedule and details. Their inclusion in a proposed scope should be confirmed during review rather than assumed from a general stonework inquiry.

Questions to resolve early

Is a photo enough to identify the stone?

A photo is useful as a reference, but provide the specified product, finish and dimensions when available. A visual resemblance alone does not confirm the material or installation requirements.

What should I send before selections are final?

Send the available drawings, note that selections are pending, and list the alternatives under consideration. Identify allowances or alternates in the bid instructions so assumptions can be discussed clearly.

The project design and approved selections govern the work. Details that affect support, attachments or water management should be reviewed with the responsible design professional.
