Start with the condition of the wall

A repair request should distinguish deteriorated mortar joints from damaged or missing brick. Identify the affected areas, their height above the ground and whether the work is on an occupied building. Photos of the whole wall and close views of the damage help establish what needs a closer review.

  • Mortar joint repair: describe loose, recessed or missing mortar and mark the areas proposed for repointing.
  • Brick replacement: identify damaged units and any matching material already available.
  • Openings and infill: provide dimensions, existing-condition photos and design details for changes to a masonry wall.
  • Commercial repairs: include access restrictions, operating hours, tenant coordination and the requested sequence.

Mortar repointing and material matching

Repointing removes deteriorated mortar from joints and replaces it with suitable new mortar. The replacement should be compatible with the existing masonry. Color, texture and the finished joint profile also affect the appearance of the repair.

For background on mortar compatibility, see the National Park Service guide to repointing masonry.

Share the original brick and mortar information if available. Weathering, discontinued products and previous repairs can affect the match; discuss samples and the acceptable appearance before agreeing on the work.

A cracked or damp wall may have a cause beyond worn joints. Ongoing movement, drainage defects or support concerns need to be evaluated before a surface repair is treated as the complete solution. Include any existing inspection or engineering report with your inquiry.

What affects a brick repair estimate?

The price depends on the repair limits and site conditions. A measured wall elevation helps separate mortar repointing from individual brick replacement, demolition, infill and other work.

  • Amount of repair and whether it is concentrated or spread across several elevations.
  • Wall height, work access, scaffolding and protection of nearby finishes.
  • Brick availability, mortar selection, sample requirements and matching expectations.
  • Occupied-building restrictions, cleanup, debris removal and schedule.
  • Design details or inspections required for the proposed work.

A photo can start the conversation, but it may not show concealed damage or establish a final scope. We will discuss what additional measurements, documents or site review are needed before a proposal is finalized.

Questions about masonry repairs

Are tuckpointing and repointing the same?

People often use “tuckpointing” to describe mortar joint repair. Repointing is replacement of deteriorated joint mortar; traditional tuckpointing is a decorative joint treatment. Tell us the condition and finish you want so the proposed work is clear.

Can you price a repair from photos?

Send a wide view, close-up photos, approximate dimensions and the jobsite address. Include the wall height and access conditions. Those details support an initial discussion; the final scope may require additional information or a site review.

Do you review commercial and residential work?

Send the property type and repair scope. We review requests from general contractors, property managers and owners, with project fit and scheduling confirmed for each inquiry.

What if the work also includes new masonry?

Identify repairs separately from new brick veneer, CMU block walls or stone masonry. This keeps quantities, materials and responsibilities clear.
